NEUROLOGY

Neurology is a specialty of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diverse medical conditions associated with the central nervous system (brain, and the spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (nerves that lies outside the spinal cord and the brain, connecting the CNS with the entire human body).

Neurology is characterized as a nonsurgical department, whilst the neurological branch of medicine specialized in surgery is known as neurosurgery.

The Department of Neurology at AVIVO Group aims to be a leader in delivering high value, comprehensive, patient-oriented neuroscience care through multidisciplinary combination, innovation, research, education, and service.

We provide the most advanced neuroscience-centred care to the UAE and beyond; to facilitate healthcare; to introduce and develop new knowledge to help decrease the burden of neurological problems on our patients and the community.

The Department of Neurology in AVIVO Group has a large, diverse faculty, engaged, highly motivated trainees, and dedicated staff committed to perfection and working together in an environment that combines the science and art of medicine.

At AVIVO Group, we offer consultation services for the following.
Headache and Migraine

Headaches: There are many kinds of headaches. The most popular are the primary headaches such as migraine, tension headache or cluster headache. We carefully examine and understand about your problem, where it starts, if there are accompanying symptoms, if it is long-lasting, and its frequency. After a thorough analysis, we advise you for the right treatment.

Migraine is another most commonly occurring issue. The word migraine could indicate the attack or can mean the underlying illness that could cause the seizures. Migraine pain can be one-sided of the head or on both sides, can swap sides. Migraine is more than a headache, and migraine pain typically comes with nausea or vomiting, oversensitivity to light, noise, movement, or even smell.

If you have long-lasting attacks of a bad headache for hours or days, with queasiness or a preference for rest, you almost certainly have migraines.

Migraine is a disorder of the brain. Migraine can be acute or episodic or chronic.

Speech and Swallowing Disorders

Evaluation and consultation are available for neurological conditions like:

  • Stroke
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Neuromuscular speech disorders resulting from Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) as well as other conditions
  • Geriatric-related conditions (patient/family education and counselling for Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia, cognitive changes)
Epilepsy

There is a wide range of treatments possible for children and adults dealing with epilepsy to help control seizures neurologically. Each person responds to medication differently. One treatment that works for a person’s situation might not have the same results for another. As such, it is essential to consult a physician before starting or stopping any medication.

Dizziness

Many people say they feel dizzy when they are overwhelmed by emotion, shaky on their feet, weak, faint, or lightly nauseous. Dizziness can be a feeling that happens when signals from the eyes, the inner ear, and the body’s positional receptors collect information that clashes. Dizziness is also used as a generic term to explain sensations of vertigo, loss of balance, and faintness.

At AVIVO Group, our neurology department provides care to patients with undiagnosed or sharp persistent dizziness that have been seen by a neurologist and seek a second opinion. We aim to diagnose and help patients find solutions to manage their symptoms and enhance their quality of life. These may include recommendations for medication, rehabilitation, and on-going physiotherapy and psychiatric attention.

Visual Disturbances

If you have not been able to get a specific diagnosis for your vision issue, our neurologists in the Department of Neurology at AVIVO Group, will be able to help. Our extremely skilled team has the experience and high patient volume to recognize symptoms and make the correct diagnosis.

We can see urgent cases with immediate effect. Additionally, collaborate with experts from Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Interventional Radiology, and Ophthalmology, so you get coordinated, multidisciplinary care.

We provide thorough, accurate diagnostic testing, including a comprehensive eye exam, pupil reactivity, colour vision, side vision, and ocular alignment. We also deal with computerized visual field testing, and optical coherence tomography.

Loss of Consciousness

Loss of consciousness is a situation of lack of awareness of self and the surroundings. The patient does not respond and will not react to any stimulation. Unconsciousness can last from seconds to more extended periods and occurs due to a lack of adequate oxygen in the brain, which can happen for a variety of reasons.

Although loss of consciousness is not a life-threatening problem, immediate medical attention is required.

Tingling and Numbness

Numbness (lost, decreased, or altered sensation) and tingling (an odd prickling sensation) are kinds of temporary paraesthesia.

These sensations usually occur after sitting or standing in the same position for a long time. It pressurizes the nerves and blood vessels and reduce sensation.

Management for numbness and tingling largely depends on its cause. In the event of severe or painful paralysis, treatment might involve a short round of corticosteroids, which also quickens recovery by reducing inflammation.

Weakness and Paralysis

Paralysis is several forms of loss of mobility of the upper or lower limbs that are present with no reflex activity and in which there is no organic cause found.

Weakness reduces the ability of an arm or leg due to the nervous system not working correctly. People with functional weakness experience symptoms of weakness in the limbs, which can be disabling and frightening.

Neurology Services are offered from the following centres of AVIVO Group:

The doctor of Neurology, also known as a Neurologist, is a specialist trained in the management and nonsurgical treatment of the conditions, illnesses and injuries that affect the human nervous system and in turn disrupts the normal functioning of the body.

Avivo Health Group has established a network of clinics and hospitals offering Neurology services in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. Our specialists aim to provide a broad approach for the examination and management of the Neurological illnesses with comprehensive and effective diagnostic and treatment procedures.

Our Neurologists in UAE provide instant and high-quality services to patients who experience some common symptoms like:

  • Confusion
  • Muscles weakness
  • Coordination problems
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • A change in sensation
  • Poor cognitive abilities
  • Decreased alertness
  • Undefined pain

Our Neurologists also provide expert services to the patients experiencing problems with their visual and audio senses as well as touch and smell. It is recognized by our team of medical practitioners that some conditions impairing an individual’s senses have an underlying neurological cause.

Our Neurological facilities are equipped to identify the different neurological disorders; some of these disorders are:

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Seizures and epilepsy
  • Stroke
  • Headaches and Migraine
  • Infections in the structures of the Nervous System that includes Meningitis
  • Disorder in the Spinal Cord that includes autoimmune diseases and inflammatory diseases
  • Neuromuscular disorders – disorders affecting the nerves that control the voluntary movement of your muscles including Myasthenia Gravis
  • Neurodegenerative disorders – disorders responsible for the death of certain parts of the brain, contributing to the elimination of the said part’s function for human body which most commonly includes the Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease

Neurology is a wide specialty of medicine because the human nervous system is the most complex system of human body. Our Neurologists have their interests divided into different subspecialties. This makes them highly qualified Neurology professionals who provide their services more comprehensively for patients who show symptoms that lie under their subspecialized expertise. Some of these are:

  • Headache care and medicine
  • Vascular care and medicine – focused on brain strokes
  • Epilepsy management
  • Autonomic disorder management
  • Neuromuscular care and medicine
  • Neurocritical care and medicine
  • Neuroradiology intervention and diagnosis
  • Child Neurology
  • Geriatric Neurology – comprising the disorders that effect the elderly caused by their nervous system’s aging and causing their body to become vulnerable

Our Neurology departments located in the clinics and hospitals in UAE takes the assistance of a number of diagnostic and assessment procedures to identify the patient’s correct disorder and eliminate all other suspicions they were lead to, due to the array of similar symptoms.

Electromyography (EMG)

Electromyography is a Neurological examination technique which measures the electrical activity between a peripheral nerve found in your limb (hand or leg) and the CNS. This nervous connection helps in the coordinal movement of muscles, and any non-connectivity found in the electrical activity can show signs of spinal cord disease or general nerve dysfunction.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

During EEG, the electrical activity in the patient’s brain is measured and examined, via electrodes that are applied on the patient’s scalp. EEG is the diagnostic technique used for the identification of brain tumors, brain injuries, inflammation in the brain, signs of seizures and psychiatric diseases.

Lumbar Puncture

Lumbar Puncture is an assessment procedure that is used when our Neurologist’s assume that the patient’s condition relates to the spinal fluid, meaning that either the condition can be detected via the fluid or treated by its medical manipulation. During this test, a needle is inserted in the patient’s spinal cord to extract a small amount of the fluid, which is sent as a sample to the laboratory for further examination.

Tensilon Test

Tensilon Test is a diagnostic approach that lies under the expertise of a neuromuscular Neurologist, to diagnose the disease named Myasthenia Gravis. A Neurologist will inject the patient with a chemical called Tensilon, after which the effect on muscles is observed, and detected whether the weakness in the muscle is a result of the disease.

Other imaging techniques like CT scan, PET scan or MRIs, and Angiography tests are also used to diagnose for Neurological Disorders, by our Neurologists or our primary care physicians.
