Under the umbrella of our ENT department, we offer a wide range of treatments and procedures, ranging from general to complex disorders.

The treatments and procedures are as mentioned:

The ears consist of glands, which in turn produce ear wax in the ear canal. Dust and other small particles may get trapped and cause damage or infect to the eardrum. Earwax protects our ears from invasion of external elements.

Earwax production may vary from person to person, depending on external factors like the environment.

Causes of Blockage & impaction:

Anything that affects the outward flow of ear wax may lead to impaction or blockage.

Causes of Impaction:

  • Old age
  • Usage of earphones, headphones or hearing aid
  • use of Inappropriate objects like cotton buds, hairpins, and toothpicks to
  • clean the ears.
  • Abnormal shape or narrow ear canals
  • Signs and Symptoms of Ear blockage:
  • Trouble hearing
  • Dizziness
  • Itching or ear pain
  • Constant ringing in the ears
  • Ear fullness or a sensation that something is plugged in your ears
  • Leakage from the ear canal
  • Diagnosis and Treatment

At AVIVO Clinics, our ENT specialists will ask you about your medical history, which includes ear problems or any procedures you may have had. They will then carefully examine your ears with an otoscope and test your hearing. Depending on the severity, the specialist may recommend a single or bilateral procedure.

A foreign body is any object other than ear wax that is in your ear. Foreign bodies are generally trapped in the outer ear canal.

  • Common foreign bodies
  • Food pieces or seeds
  • Cotton
  • Paper
  • Beads
  • Rocks
  • Small toy pieces
  • Buttons or small batteries
  • Insects such as cockroaches

Children are more susceptible to foreign bodies as they can maneuver tiny objects, whereas foreign bodies in adults are mainly insects like flies, moths and sometimes even cotton balls or cotton swabs from earbuds.

Symptoms

  • Ear pain and discomfort
  • Trouble hearing
  • Itchiness or redness
  • Thick discharge or foul odor from the ear
  • Dizziness or Nausea
  • Diagnosis and Treatment

Our experienced specialists are masters in removing foreign bodies. However, the successful removal of foreign bodies depends on various factors like the type of object and location (how deep) of the foreign body, object material, and patient cooperation. Several treatments are available at AVIVO Clinics, but the outcome depends on the situation and type of foreign body.

Tympanometry is a medical test to determine disorders in the middle ear and movement of the eardrum (tympanic membrane).

Tympanometry test rules out several things like the presence of fluid in the middle ear, an ear infection (Otitis media), a perforation (tear) in the eardrum.

Hearing loss due to the presence of fluid in the middle ear is common, especially in children as their immune system is not entirely developed, and Tympanometry serves as an objective analysis for the middle ear and eardrum.

Diagnosis and Treatment

A probe like device called Tympanometer (like an ear thermometer) conducts the test. It is inserted in the ear to measure the movement of the eardrum in response to air pressure. The test results are then measured and recorded on a graph called tympanogram.

The ENT specialist may conduct Tympanometry every few weeks to determine how much fluid a patient has in the middle ear over a while.

Audiometry is a branch of Audiology. It is a painless, non-invasive hearing evaluation that measures a person’s ability to hear different sounds, frequencies, or pitches. Hearing loss prevails with age and mainly affects people in the age group of 50-80 years.

Audiometry testing is a popular method to detect one’s hearing and other disorders of the inner ear. This test can detect whether one has sensorineural hearing loss (nerve damage) or conductive hearing loss (eardrum damage or damage in the ossicle bones).

Common causes of hearing loss:

  • Exposure to loud sounds or noises
  • Ruptured Eardrum
  • Ear injury
  • Otosclerosis (Inherited condition)
  • Inner ear defects

During an Audiometry evaluation, the physicians at AVIVO Group may perform a variety of tests like:

Simple testing

The doctors at AVIVO Group may conduct simple tests and ask you to complete a questionnaire and listen to whispered voices, tuning forks, or tones from an ear examination scope.

Formal Testing

Formal testing provides precise results for hearing. These include:

Audiogram or pure tone testing:

During this test, one wears earphones that are attached to an audiometer. The patient signals the doctor to once they hear a sound. Each tone depicts a minimum volume of hearing.

A testing device known as the bone oscillator is placed on the mastoid bone to perform bone testing.

Speech Audiometry:

This test determines your hearing ability to identify and repeat spoken words at different volume levels using a headset.

Immittance Audiometry:

This Audiometry test determines the functionality of the eardrum and sound flow through the middle ear. The analysis is performed by inserting a probe into the ear and pumping air through it. A microphone monitors the sound in the ear under different pressures.

Non-Surgical ENT Management and Therapies

The expertise in ENT Services are not centralized to surgical procedures only, however, ENT Specialists by AVIVO Group offers non-invasive and non-surgical management of the following conditions:

  • Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea – Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the treatment that can be benefitted by people with Obstructive Sleep Apnea and snoring. This treatment helps in keeping the upper airway passages constantly open, providing the breathing air with the required pressure. Nasal masks, face masks and nasal pillows can be secured around your mouth and nose while you sleep.
  • Vocal Cord Lesions like Nodules and Polyps – the Vocal Cord Lesions caused by different forms of trauma to the Vocal Cords can be treated conservatively with dietary treatments, behavioral modification guided by a speech language pathologist and voice therapy. These therapeutic strategies can enhance vocal function and efficiency, followed by behavioral intervention strategies and vocal awareness.
  • ENT related Vertigo – vertigo is a condition where you feel that the world is moving around you. Shouldn’t be confused with dizziness. Vertigo makes your environment move and making it difficult to go through day to day activities. Your ENT specialist will examine the cause of Vertigo and will then prescribe you medication and physical therapy to help relieve your symptoms. For Meniere’s disease, which is somewhat like Vertigo, your ENT doctor will instruct you to switch to a diet with low sodium until the symptoms eliminate.
Surgical Procedures

Some of the minor ailments can sometimes rapidly transform into life threatening conditions. Thus, following surgical techniques are used when medicines and therapies are not as effective to treat the disease.

  • Adenoidectomy – a procedure to surgically remove a child’s adenoids; adenoids take a small spot in your immune system and they are removed to improve a child’s breathing rhythm during sleep. Adenoids get bigger in shape sometimes and completely block a child’s nose resulting in distorted sleep pattern with painful difficulty. Adenoidectomy results in the children’s reduced vulnerability to illnesses and their prevention from symptoms of recurring nasal infection and obstruction.
  • Grommet Insertions – for your children facing recurrent ear infections and glued ears, small tubes called Grommets are surgically inserted inside their ear drums to maintain a constant air flow that in turn prevents the buildup of fluids. All hearing problems caused by frequent glued ears will dissolve; the grommets will automatically fall off after some time.
  • Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) – a minimally invasive surgical technique to clear sinuses and improve sinus ventilation by using nasal endoscopes to widen and enlarge the pathway of the nasal drainage, restoring normal functioning and minimizing chronic symptoms.
